The mission of the Branford Public Schools is to develop life-long learners who are capable and confident, who succeed in a changing global society and who contribute to their community. In keeping with the spirit of this mission, and leading by example, Branford High School has chosen UTC Power’s super-efficient, ultra-lowemission PureComfort® tri-generation solution to provide cooling, heating and on-site power for its 1,200-student facility in Branford, Connecticut.
The PureComfort® tri-generation solution is a combination of an optimized absorption chiller integrated with four 65-kilowatt microturbines. It is the industry’s first integrated microturbine and double-effect absorption chiller energy solution.
“The UTC Power system was the sensible choice for us; it can provide power, cooling and heating simultaneously in a clean, green, efficient manner. Plus, we know we can count on having backup power if there’s a grid failure."
Mark Deming Director of Facilities, Branford High School
Energy Productivity
The PureComfort® solution at Branford High School will be the first in the state to provide simultaneous heating and cooling, with no seasonal changeover required, using the hot exhaust from its natural gas-fired microturbines to drive the absorption chiller. The system will lower the school’s energy bills and provide positive cash flow for the school district.
UTC Power PureComfort® solutions are extremely energy efficient. They can achieve an overall energy utilization of up to 90 percent – far greater than the 33 percent typical of the national electric grid. These systems also reduce a customer’s carbon footprint because of their higher fuel utilizations and the use of natural gas to generate electricity, rather than coal or oil..
Energy Security
The PureComfort® solution at Branford High School is designed to operate both parallel to and independently from the grid, enabling the school to serve as an emergency shelter for the community in times of crisis.
Energy Responsibility
 | Branford High School is proving that sustainability makes economic sense. While reducing its carbon footprint, it’s also conserving natural resources. The UTC Power PureComfort® system will reduce this school's carbon footprint by 48 metric tons each year.* To achieve the same positive environmental impact, 15 acres of forest would need to be planted.** | | The power generated by this system saves over 1 million gallons of water each year*** that would otherwise be wasted by conventional electrical generation. That’s enough water to fill nearly 2 Olympic-size swimming pools. Water conservation is especially important as humanity battles to conserve precious water resources. | | Reduction of harmful emissions like nitrogen oxides (NOx), is yet another environmental benefit of PureComfort® system technology. NOx emissions will be reduced at Branford High School by almost 2.3 metric tons each year, which equates to the same environmental benefit as removing 134 cars**** from the road. | * Based on New England electric grid information (NEWE). ** Each acre of forest assumed to absorb 1.3 ton of carbon per year (Ref: Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). *** Based on the use of 1,062 gal/MWhr of power generation plants in CT. (Ref: U.S. Geological Survey). **** Each car assumed to generate 38 lb NOx/year (Ref: U.S. EPA).
