Super-efficient, reliable, clean, energy-saving alternatives — the future is here.
Hilton New York

Hilton Hosts a Cleaner
Environment with the
PureCell® Model 200
Fuel Cell Powerplant

Leading the hospitality industry with clean energy

Hilton New York, a prime 1,980-room property of Hilton Hotels Corporation (HHC) in New York City, has demonstrated its commitment to clean, productive energy by installing a PureCell® Model 200 powerplant.

Hilton New York installed the PureCell® system as part of the Hilton Hotels Corporation green programs on a global level. The system will provide a portion of the hotel’s power and hot water – while reducing their carbon footprint, minimizing the release of harmful pollutants and conserving both water and energy.

“With a global vision to be the first choice of the world’s travelers, we at Hilton Hotels Corporation are concentrating on eco-friendly initiatives that our Hilton Family of Hotels can adopt to help improve and sustain the environment for future generations of travelers.

The fuel cell at the Hilton New York is one of the more significant ways we can have an impact on energy consumption in one of the largest cities in the world.”

 Energy Productivity

It’s all about doing more with less. More than half of the energy potential in traditional power generation goes up the stack as waste heat. In contrast, the UTC Power fuel cell converts heat exhaust into heating and cooling, turning potential waste into useable energy. While central power plants achieve conversion percentages in the lower 30s, UTC Power solutions can attain energy conversion efficiencies up to 90 percent. High system efficiencies translate into greater fuel utilization, thereby contributing to the conservation of natural resources and energy.

 Energy Security

The PureCell® system delivers energy security and reliability. More than $90 billion is lost each year in the United States alone as the result of power outages. The fuel cell system at the Hilton New York will operate even if the power goes out, ensuring the hotel will enjoy continuous operation of many of its primary systems.

“We’re delighted to have a key role in helping Hilton New York address its environmental and energy needs. For clean on-site power generation, the UTC Power PureCell® system is the proven world leader in long-term fuel cell reliability and durability. Our stationary fuel cell fleet has attained a major milestone: 8 million hours of operation.”

 Energy Responsibility

Hilton is proving that sustainability makes economic sense. While reducing its carbon footprint, it’s also conserving natural resources. The UTC Power fuel cell will reduce Hilton New York's carbon footprint by 780 tons each year. To achieve the same positive environmental impact, 160 acres* of forest would need to be planted.

The power generated by a megawatt of fuel cells saves over 4 million gallons** of water each year that would otherwise be wasted by conventional electrical generation. That’s enough water to fill more than 6 Olympic-size swimming pools. Water conservation is especially important as humanity battles to conserve precious water resources.

Reduction of harmful emissions like nitrogen oxides (NOx), is yet another environmental benefit of fuel cell technology. NOx emissions will be reduced at the Hilton by almost 3 tons each year, which equates to the same environmental benefit as removing 140 cars*** from the road.
